How AMALGEROL ESSENCE increased potato yield: the effects of tuber treatment and foliar application

Russia is producing the second most potatoes after China. An average Russian eats 130 kg potatoes per person per year. So in short, potato is an important crop in Russia (and the world). In this standardised registration trial, AMALGEROL ESSENCE was tested on potatoes on a rather poor soil a slightly acidic, sandy podzol.

 

5 different AMALGEROL ESSENCE (AME) treatments were compared to a treated control with a background fertilization of NPK 90-90-90:

a) tuber treatment (TT) only (0.1 l AME in 10 l water per ton of tubers)
b) 2 foliar applications with 1.5 l/ha AME
c) 2 foliar application with 2.5 l/ha AME
d) a combined with b (TT + 2 x 1.5 l/ha) e) a combined with c (TT + 2 x 2.5 l/ha)
The trial was conducted on 100 m² plots (only 50 m² used to avoid edge effects) with 4 replicates per treatment.

 

AMALGEROL ESSENCE showed a very positive effect on quantity and quality of potato yield (Fig. 1-4). The high yield increase (Fig. 1) is a combination of a higher tuber number per bush (mainly induced by foliar applications of AME, Fig. 3) and bigger potatoes (mainly induced by the tuber treatment, Fig. 2). The elevated starch content in the AME treatments with foliar application indicate an accelerated physiological maturation. This means AME allows to harvest potatoes earlier if necessary (e.g., unfavorable weather conditions etc). The vitamin C content was not affected by AMALGEROL ESSENCE. The nitrate content was significantly reduced compared to the control in 2 AME treatments (d, e), whereas it was similar or slightly higher in other AME treatments (a, b, c). Therefore, further studies are necessary to get a clear idea of and how AME can influence the nitrate content.
